The Catamount Trail spans the length of Vermont, providing 300 miles of winter-use trail for skiing and snowshoeing. In 2017, GreenInfo in conjunction with the Center for Community GIS (CCGIS) helped the Catamount Trail Association to add an interactive map of tourism activities and attractions to their website.
Working closely with the
Center for Community GIS (CCGIS), GreenInfo created a simple but effective map of ski locations, amenities, and businesses near the Catamount Trail.
The points of interest are loaded from a set of CSV files provided by the Catamount Trail Association (CTA) staff. This seemingly "low-tech" approach allows the CTA to do their own data updates without involving GreenInfo staff, resulting in zero maintenance costs for data updates. The markers displayed were custom-created by CCGIS.
The 300-mile length of the Catamount Trail is divided into 31 sections. On the map, each of these sections can be clicked to connect to the CTA website to read more about that section of the trail. Similarly, the CTA website pages describing the trail sections have links to the map, which will zoom the map to that section automatically. This bi-directional integration between the map and the rest of the website makes for a convenient and interactive user experience.
