Led by a local nonprofit organization and supported by a consortium of local and statewide agencies, the "Green Solutions" project integrates GIS analysis and hydrologic engineering with conservation and community needs to provide a roadmap to designing "smart" green spaces that naturally treat polluted runoff in urban Los Angeles County.
Building from an initial assessment of regional stormwater treatment needs across Los Angeles County, the team of Community Conservation Solutions, GreenInfo Network, and Psomas Engineering drilled down into two highly urbanized Los Angeles watersheds to prioritize potential "Green Solution" project sites. Combining GIS data on water quality and quantity, local community needs, and habitat factors, we analyzed hundreds of public properties and prioritized locations that have high potential for stormwater treatment as well as provide park, recreation, or habitat areas for the highest-need communities.
Results: The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy are now using the "atlas" of prioritized Green Solutions projects to help identify potential projects, recruit local agency partners, and plan for more integrated stormwater management across the Santa Monica Bay and Upper Los Angeles River watersheds.
