The smallest sized county in California, Santa Cruz is one of the most biologically diverse. The Land Trust of Santa Cruz County embarked on a major long range plan developed with the assistance of a consulting group that included GreenInfo Network.
The overall Conservation Blueprint involved scores of experts and two years of intense discussion and analysis. Working with our long-time partners at the Bay Area Open Space Council, GreenInfo staff designed maps to support the process of determining what lands to prioritize for biodiversity protection.
When it came time to develop the actual Blueprint document, GreenInfo was asked to create very detailed maps that would read well in a standard, page-size, printed report. Working under a tight deadline, we created 10 final maps that everything from habitat patch sizes to pathogens in impaired waterways, to the actual conservation lands network itself. The printed size of these maps was approximately 4"x6" which required extremely effective cartography to show the detail but at the same time convey the overall message of the data.
The very attractive project summary report is available for download (2.6mb PDF) from the Land Trust of Santa Cruz website. All of the project maps are available here: http://www.landtrustsantacruz.org/blueprint/maps.htm
Results: The Conservation Blueprint is defining the future program work of the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County over the next 25 years.
